Mighty Mule Access Control Installation: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide

If your Mighty Mule gate has stopped responding to remotes, keypads, or the intercom, the access control board is the usual suspect. We stock and install Mighty Mule access control components across the Las Vegas Valley, with most replacements running $285 – $540 parts and labor depending on which model sits inside your gate operator. In most cases we can have a technician out the same day you call (725) 777-5391, and the price is always written down before we touch a bolt.

The way owners usually discover this failure is unglamorous: the gate worked fine yesterday, and today the remote does nothing. Or the keypad lights up but the gate ignores it. That receiver board, the little circuit board that translates “button pressed” into “motor run,” lives in a metal box that gets hammered by desert sun. In Las Vegas, the inside of that housing can reach 140°F in July, which is hard on capacitors and solder joints no matter whose board is in there.

Which Mighty Mule Models This Applies To

We run into three Mighty Mule families here in Las Vegas: the older MM series (MM260, MM360, MM371, MM562), the newer M series (M350, M500, M700), and the heavy-duty dual-gate systems built around the FM350 or FM700 control boards. The access control board is the same core part across many of these, but the wiring harness and connector layout changed between generations, so you can’t always drop a new board into an older housing without an adapter or a little rewiring.

Here’s the gotcha most owners don’t know: Mighty Mule boards from different years look nearly identical from the outside. The easiest way to identify yours is the sticker on the control board itself, which lists the model and a date code. We match by that sticker, not by the operator’s marketing name. We install genuine Mighty Mule parts along with quality aftermarket equivalents when they’re a better value. For most Las Vegas homes, the OEM board and a solid aftermarket replacement perform the same, but if your gate does more than 30 cycles a day, I’d put the genuine board in – the aftermarket relays just don’t hold up to that kind of duty cycle in the heat.

Signs Your Mighty Mule Access Control Installation Is Failing

  • Remote stopped working, but the keypad still opens the gate. The receiver portion of the control board has failed while the hardwired inputs still work. This happens gradually in Las Vegas because the receiver chip runs hot inside that sealed housing.
  • Gate opens on its own at random times. A failing relay on the control board can momentarily close the circuit, which reads as a “signal” to the operator. It’s not a ghost – it’s a relay with burned contacts.
  • Keypad accepts the code, beeps, and nothing happens. The board is receiving the input but failing to send the open command to the motor controller. Classic capacitor failure, and we see it more in the MM series boards that are 7+ years old.
  • Intermittent operation – works in the morning, dead by afternoon. Thermal expansion with the desert heat cycling. A solder joint cracks when hot, reconnects when cool. This is a board on borrowed time.
  • Access control board test button works, but nothing external does. The board’s own diagnostic still functions, which tells us the logic chip is alive, but the input/output section has failed. This confirms it’s the access board, not the motor or limit switches.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what we quote in Las Vegas, written plainly because that’s the only honest way to quote gate work:

  • Mighty Mule access control board replacement (single gate): $285 – $410 installed, including the board, labor, wiring verification, and re-programming your existing remotes and keypad.
  • Dual-gate access control replacement: $380 – $540 installed. The dual systems run a heavier board and often need the slave wiring re-verified, which adds time.
  • Full access control retrofit (board, receiver, new keypad, programming all remotes): $520 – $760 installed. This is for owners adding a keypad where none existed, or replacing a system that’s been partially struck by lightning or a power surge.

Every one of those prices goes on paper before we start. No dispatcher-gives-a-range-then-tech-doubles-it nonsense. The written quote includes the part, the labor, the diagnostic time, and the 365-Day Done Right Promise on the repair. If it fails inside a year, we come back and make it right at no charge – that’s not a marketing line, it’s printed on the invoice.

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. You can safely check a few things on your Mighty Mule access system: confirm the breaker is on, check that the battery (if you have one) isn’t swollen or leaking, and visually inspect whether water has gotten into the control box. That’s the extent of what I’d recommend to an owner. Opening the control board compartment and swapping components means working with 120V or 24V DC wiring, and if you mis-wire that board you can fry the motor controller that sits next to it – that’s a $400 mistake on top of the original repair.

And here’s the thing with access control specifically: the board has to be matched to your remotes’ frequency and your operator’s revision. Install the wrong revision and nothing pairs, no matter how neatly you wire it. Call us at (725) 777-5391 and we’ll tell you the real price before we send a truck.
