Get your free estimateLinear Gate Motor Replacement: The Las Vegas Owner’s Guide
If your Linear gate operator has stopped moving the gate, a replacement motor typically runs $450 – $850 installed here in Las Vegas, depending on the model and whether we’re swapping just the motor or the full actuator assembly. We stock Linear-compatible motors on our trucks and can usually complete the swap in under two hours. Most homeowners find out their motor is dead the hard way: they hit the remote, hear a click or a hum, and the gate doesn’t budge. That’s when they call us and describe the sound over the phone, and we can usually narrow down whether it’s the motor, the capacitor, or the control board before we even roll the truck.
Which Linear Models This Applies To
The Linear gate operator line covers a lot of ground, and the motor inside varies by model family. The LRA series (LRA-S, LRA-D) uses a different motor assembly than the older APeX or the swing-arm LS series. The dual-swing LRA-D runs two motors, and in our experience it’s often just one that fails while the other keeps working, which makes the gate open halfway and stop. That’s a very specific symptom we see all over Summerlin and Henderson.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: the motor itself is frequently sold as part of the full operator head assembly, so a “motor replacement” often means replacing the gearhead or the actuator arm, not just the electric motor inside. For swing gates, the actuator is the motorized arm that physically pushes the gate open. For slide gates, the motor assembly sits inside the operator box and drives a chain or belt. You can identify your exact model by checking the label inside the operator cover; it’ll show the series letter and a date code.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question: Linear OEM parts carry the exact factory spec, but they’re priced accordingly and sometimes backordered for weeks. Quality aftermarket equivalents, when matched correctly, can save $80 – $150 and perform just as well. We carry both, we’ll be straight about which one makes sense for your gate, and if an aftermarket part doesn’t meet the original torque spec for your gate’s weight and length, we won’t install it. Portcullis Gate Repair Las Vegas is an independent service provider, by the way, not affiliated with Linear or its parent company. We’re just a local crew that’s been fixing their operators since 2008.

Signs Your Linear Gate Motor Replacement Is Failing
- Gate hums but doesn’t move. The motor’s getting power but the capacitor has failed or the gear inside has stripped. This is the most common failure mode we see in Las Vegas, and it usually means the motor assembly itself is on its way out. The capacitor swap is cheaper; the stripped gear means new motor time.
- Gate opens fine but won’t close, or vice versa. When a Linear motor starts losing torque in one direction, it’s often a worn brush or a failing limit switch inside the actuator. The limit switch tells the motor where to stop; when it drifts, the operator gets confused and refuses to complete one direction of travel.
- Gate moves slower than it used to, especially in summer. Las Vegas heat accelerates motor wear, and a motor that’s dragging at 105°F is telling you its windings are degrading. This one’s sneaky because it still “works,” right up until the day it doesn’t and you’re stuck with a gate half-open across your driveway.
- You have to hit the remote multiple times. That’s usually the motor’s starting circuit struggling to kick over. It draws more current on startup than a healthy motor does, and the control board senses the overload and backs off. Each failed start is a little more damage done.
- Burning smell or visible scorch marks near the operator. If you smell hot electrical components, kill power to the operator at the breaker and stop using the gate. A motor that’s overheating is a fire risk, plain and simple. Call us before you run it again.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
Let’s talk real numbers for the Las Vegas market, because you deserve to know what this costs before you commit to anything.
| Job Type | Typical Installed Price |
|---|---|
| Capacitor replacement (if that’s all it is) | $95 – $165 |
| Slide gate motor assembly (single, Linear-compatible) | $450 – $650 |
| Swing gate actuator arm (single) | $550 – $850 |
| Full operator head replacement (motor + control board) | $800 – $1,350 |
The range comes down to which Linear model you have, whether the gearbox needs replacing along with the motor (it often does on older units), and whether you’re getting OEM or a matched aftermarket part. Every quote we write includes parts, labor, disposal of the old assembly, and a test cycle to confirm the gate’s travel limits are set correctly. You get the number in writing before a single bolt gets turned, and if the repair fails inside a year, the 365-Day Done Right Promise means we come back and fix it at no charge. No fine print, no re-quote. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s stamped on every invoice we write.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. What you can safely do yourself: check that the breaker hasn’t tripped, make sure the manual release lever is seated properly (on swing actuators, a half-engaged release will make the motor run but the gate won’t move), and listen to the operator when you hit the remote: a hum, a click, or silence tells us a lot. Write down what you hear and what the gate does or doesn’t do.
What you shouldn’t do is open the operator housing and start swapping parts. Linear operators carry 120V or 240V inside the cabinet, and a gate that weighs 400 pounds moves with enough force to break bones if you’re in the wrong spot when a limit switch fails. Dean Prescott will tell you the same thing on the phone: “Tell me what the gate is doing, or not doing, and I’ll give you a real number before I touch a single bolt.” A capacitor discharge or a control board short isn’t worth the emergency room bill. Call us at (725) 777-5391 and we’ll get eyes on it.
FAQs
A properly maintained Linear motor lasts 10 – 15 years in most climates, but in Las Vegas the heat and dust typically cut that to 7 – 10 years. Motors running gates that face direct afternoon sun and lack a shade cover fail fastest; the internal insulation cooks slowly until the windings short. If your operator is past year seven and starting to act up, replacement is usually smarter than repeated patch repairs.
Sometimes. A failed capacitor, a worn brush, or a drifted limit switch can be repaired or replaced without a full motor swap, and that’s always our first look. But a motor with burnt windings or a stripped gearbox is done; rebuilding it costs more in labor than a new motor assembly. We diagnose before we quote, so you’ll know exactly which category yours falls into. Call (725) 777-5391 and describe the symptom; we’ll tell you honestly whether a repair looks possible or a replacement makes better sense.
Most motor and actuator swaps take 60 – 90 minutes once the truck is on site. If the gearbox needs attention or we’re doing a full operator head replacement, plan for closer to two hours. We show up with the parts on the truck for the common Linear models; if yours needs something we don’t stock that day, we’ll order it and give you a real arrival window for the install.
We stock Linear-compatible motors and actuator arms for the LRA, LS, and APeX series on our trucks, along with capacitors, limit switches, and control boards. We also carry parts for LiftMaster, Mighty Mule, and Ghost Controls operators. If your exact model calls for something we don’t have on the shelf, we’ll give you a written quote and a straight answer on lead time.
